#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 13 Another Character, This Time Not My Fav

Today I sketched a general image of a side character for my new story project.
His name is Won-Seok Seonwoo (선우원석, 18).
He is a handsome and gentlemanly guy that Ji-Eun has had a crush for a long time. (Ji-Eun is the character I drew yesterday, who can be seen here: http://projectmacy365.blogspot.ca/2012/03/5-doodle-day-day-12-drawing-character.html

Well, he is good at virtually everything and attracts many girls.
He is a kind of character -- very nice and kind-looking but actually manneristic and superficial -- that I do not find attractive, both as a person and as a guy.

But as a CHARACTER in MY story, he SHOULD be more attractive. Unless I will just find him too boring and delete his character :P
So... yeah! I need to make him more attractive than a guy with a handsome look and nice manners. :)

The person I had in mind when I drew this was Nickkhun.
He is a famous celebrity in Korea and Asia, I guess.
(I found a Wikipedia page on him.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nichkhun_Horvejkul)
I do not know him much, (I do not know about celebrities in general)
and I am NOT saying that he is not so good as he looks like, please bear that in mind.
But to me he clearly has the look that makes him look nice.

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 12 Drawing a Character - Ji-Eun

Another time-consuming doodle day!
I knew it would take some time. That's why I began it after doing some study. But it took way longer than I expected. It almost took.... 3-4 hours!! X(
So here it is, another protagonist for my story project (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung).
Her name is Ji-Eun Tak (탁지은, 18).

She is a 12th grade student, a taciturn loner in school, and a miniature artist with a distinguished taste for clothing and lifestyle outside school.
She does not talk much, and she is definitely not a great socializer. When she is slandered or blamed for, she usually does not bother to defend herself. Her peers tease or ignore her for being gloomy and silent.
But I think that she is very brave to pursue her own life. She is also a doer rather than a talker.

This is not the first time I worked on her character. You could see how I began imaging her in this post. I was brainstorming about her art and clothing, etc. >> http://projectmacy365.blogspot.ca/2012/03/4-brainstorming-day-2-dressing-code.html :)

Working Progress:
I began with an image of a girl who looks taciturn and gloomy..... Well, at least that's what I had in mind.
I imagined her not to have much expression usually, looking indifferent and sulky.
But when she smiles, which happens pretty rarely and only in front of people closest to her, I wanted her to be a charm incarnate.

I was looking out for a hairstyle that would suit this unique (?) girl, and I found out this braided hairstyle!
I think that it looks casual, individualistic, and, well, fancy. :P
The main reason she braids her hair is so that her hair does not disturb her work with making miniature art.
In school, though, she just opts for a plain ponytail.

But when I further touched her hair, then it looked TOO fancy. It looked like a very well-groomed lady in a cocktail party or something. :(

Well, so I drew another braided hair, this time trying to make it less fancy. I didn't really like this either, but I proceeded anyway.
Oh, by the way, she is wearing a earring in the shape of a beetle.
I'd love to try one of those insect or animal jewelries (but I don't usually wear jewelry. They are itchy!)

Now, this step that looks like her skin is burnt like a toast is actually to give gradation to her face.
I don't know why I came up with this step, but that's just what I do.
(I never learnt drawing.. -_-)

With eraser, de-burnt (??) Ji-Eun!

Next I drew her clothes.
I wanted them to reflect her unique, individual code.... (Or at least that's what I had in mind.. yawn..)
I tried to attach the Asian-style belt over her jacket, but it did not work so well...

So I just gave her two straps.
Actually, these are the clothes that I would like to try on, but that are not suitable for me and perhaps too daring for me. X(
When I saw the top on the below left, I was so engrossed with it that I couldn't resist giving it to Ji-Eun. XP

By the way, her proportions are kinda... weird, mind.

Holding an apple.. She is wearing tights with walking human figures and transparent rainday shoes.

I hope that she looks like a person whom you would not easily forget. You may spot her rummaging the trash can in the streets looking for things that she would like to use for her miniature art, or installing miniature gardens in the cracked corners of the roads. If you stare for at her for too long, she would simply glance you for a split second and turn away as if nothing happened. With the same indifferent expression in her face.
She is quite a person.
I like her :)

In my story (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung), her soul and Soo-Oh's (수오) will be switched all of a sudden. Soo-Oh will be in Ji-Eun's body and vice versa.
You can see my drawings and comments on Soo-Oh in this page: http://projectmacy365.blogspot.ca/2012/03/5-doodle-day-day-1-girl-in-blue-soo-oh.html
Soo-Oh is a famous guy in school, and he is... well, simply put, leading a precarious double life.
Ji-Eun is also living a double life (a plain-looking loner as a student and a very characteristic life as an amateur artist), but they are very different. So their changed bodies are bound to cause calamities!
I'm looking forward to writing about them. :D

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 11 Designing a School

Below is the preliminary sketch for a school that would be one of the main stages for my story project. (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung)
The structure of the school is pretty important for my drama. It matters who was where doing what in a certain (critical) day. Also, I find that if I have a rough map of the stage in my mind my story gets richer (in a sense!). I can see how my protagonists be in that space. :)

But I couldn't decide on the basic design of the school.
So I tumbled and googled.
I found images of the school (and what the school formerly was), students, and blueprints! Yay!

Well, the plans were all very interesting,
But unfortunately I couldn't yet find a plan for a Korean high school. It would be rather different from an American public school..... I am not sure many Korean high schools have multimedia rooms, for example. :P
I'll keep searching and thinking about my school...

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 10 My Caricature

Today I drew caricatures (??) of myself.
Well, I didn't really capture the my facial features (except my round/long face). :)

Last night's doodle: basically I am saying, "what's that..."
Cuz I slept too much yesterday and I thought I was being so unproductive. :/

I made another me this morning in my class.
Well, the class was not "full of shit." But I read a newspaper made by my university student government just before class, and it was very much full of shit. I couldn't believe that I was paying for it. LOL

Bonus!
My other caricatures of myself!

(Girl in blue, 2009)

(2009)

(2012, again in blue trainers. Note: I do not own blue trainers. I don't even have trainers -_-)

It's pretty interesting to draw one's own self. The self-images reflect the moods and feelings of the day, which is both fun and, well, good for your mentality (??). -_+b

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 8&9 Mapping a Town & Imaging a Character III

Yesterday I began brainstorming about how the town that my new story project
(http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung) is staged would look like.

It's in the vicinity of Seoul (or in Seoul, near the edge of it) with a mountain in the back.
The part that my story is staged is not a very busy and prosperous area.
Especially around the school (one of the main stages), the people and places are pretty much self-contained and they have their own world.

I'd like to draw a whole (somewhat) detailed map of the town. :)

Today I made sketches of a character for the same story.
Her name is Miso Choi (Miso in Korean means smile) (age 17).

She is calm, gentle, and considerate.
She does not socialize and is depressed.
She writes but she does not like what she writes.
She likes flowers but she does not grow any in her house.
She has a short hair and wears black or dark dresses and clothes like below.
She is looking straight out at us, she is tense, as shown in her shoulders and also her hands clutching the hems of her skirt. (At least that's what I had in mind)

Well, I've never made or intended to make a female character who is so shut inside.
It would be both interesting and challenging to make her character convincing and intriguing.

I can't wait to image another character, Haneul Cheon (27), who would make a couple with her. :)
He is also very dark and shut inside, but in a very different way from her.

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 7 Imaging Characters II

Today's doodle is another imaging sketch for my new story project (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung -_^).
This pair is Ji-Ung Byeon, a dawdling school janitor with a lax personality (41),
And Jae-Yong Lim, a nerdy, hard-grained studyholic. (17)
Their souls switch all of a sudden, and since their characters and roles in school are very different, there are bound to be a lot of troubles. X)

The above sketch is closer to what I had in mind than the one I drew yesterday of another pair... (http://projectmacy365.blogspot.ca/2012/03/5-doodle-day-day-6-constructing.html)

Well, they are the least problematic couple out of the four couples whose souls were switched, so maybe that's why I found it easier to image them.
However, I also have to be careful lest Ji-Ung and Jae-Yong become too stereotypical side-characters. ;P

#5. A Doodle A Day - Day 6 Imaging Characters

Today (actually yesterday) I doodled about my characters in my new story project. :)
The story is about eight people finding out that their souls were exchanged all of a sudden.

I made quick preliminary sketches of one out of four couples.
Jeong-Mu Kang (17), a delinquent high school student, got his souls suddenly exchanged with a naive, timid, and incompetent school principal, Han-Mo Na (41).
They had tons of conflicts and creates a proper mess while adjusting to each other's lifestyle that is completely different from what each had. But they gradually get to understand each other better and eventually create a special friendship. :)

Bit it was kinda difficult to conceive their image...
Below: My initial sketch of Jeong-Mu was disastrous, or, just plailnly not what had in mind.
I mean he looks like an elementary school kid playing pranks on his female classmates, not a delinquent high school student who tries to look like a macho. :(

My second sketch was a bit closer to what I had in mind, but STILL FAR FROM IT.

I imaged Hanmo (the principal) to look and wear as if he is several years older than he really is (42)...

Well, I definitely need to make more sketches and think more about how to shape their characters. :)
