#7. An Art A Day - Day 6 Cosplaying Another of My Characters

It turned out that cosplaying was addictive. :P
After fidgeting over whether I should do this again or not, I decided to do it again.
This time, I'm cosplaying Miso Choi (최미소, 17), another character for my fantasy drama project, Crossing. (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung)
She is a melancholic writer who is very much shut inside.

She spent more time in hospital then at school because of her physical illness.
She is also pretty depressed. She was going to commit suicide when her soul was suddenly switched with another person, who had a lot of reason to stay alive (for revenge and love..... :P).

This is my drawing of her. You can see it and my explanations in:

The tricky thing about creating this character is that she could end up being such a stereotypical female heroine in lachrymal melodrama. She does not cry, not for her own sake, so she is not teary-teary, but still!
Well, anyway,
I did try to create that .. how shall I say.. haunting looks in her.
I also tried to make her look different from another female protagonist, Ji-Eun. (drawings and further explanations can be found here: http://haejinsung.wordpress.com/2012/04/20/5-a-doodle-a-day-day-12-drawing-a-character-ji-eun/. I cosplayed her a few days ago. (which can be seen here: http://projectmacy365.blogspot.ca/2012/04/7-art-day-day-3-cosplaying-one-of-my.html)

Ji-Eun
vs
Miso.
Do I look different?

Some of the transforming process:

Me with no makeup :P

After applying a lot of concealers to make my skin look a tone or two lighter. I imagined her to look pale.
But the photo does not show much :(

After changing the shape of my brows, eyes, and lips, I put on a black dress she usually wears. I also wore a black knit hat (I suddenly forgot what it's called..) to hide my hair and add a bit more "darkness" in my looks.
Of course I do not look exactly like my image of her in my mind.... :P

I look ... a bit... like a .... ghost? Ewwwww~

I'm trying to make her character a bit saucy and cynical in a very calm, calm, way. So she wouldn't smirk while making satirical comments at her brave yet reckless and thoughtless partner (I mean, the one whose soul was switched with hers).
I think she is a kind of person who can act out the thought she decided right away without hesitation, when she thinks that it is important for someone else (but she wasn't able to take her own life away that easily...). She could do really dangerous or even terrible and violent things for others' sake, often without telling anybody about it. In fact she wouldn't feel any need to tell somebody. She had long lost hope in communication.

Er... then again, I returned to my own self in a millisecond.

I love this effect in the web cam the most ... fufufufufu.

This time I am glad that I got to develop this character a bit further while cosplaying.
I felt pretty sad and alone when I was posing as Miso. :(

#7. An Art A Day - Day 2 Mirror Mirror on the Changing Room

As many of you know, there are two Snow White movies this year. Mirror Mirror featuring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins and Snow White and the Huntsman starring Charlize Theron, Kristen Stewart, and Chris Hemsworth. The latter is not released yet (in theatres June 1) and I haven't seen the former. Frankly I do not think I will be enchanted by either... :P But anyway!

So I found this big (?) mirror on a changing room in the apparel shop I went to today.
And the below photograph is an art for today.

Normally, in a changing room, I try things on in a hurry, take a few pictures in a hurry, and leave in a hurry. Everything is so hurry-hurry in a changing room. Weird, because where I live there isn't much crowd in apparel shops :P I take pictures so that I will remember which clothes looked okay and which looked horrible on me, for future reference for shopping and also for some degree of self-gratification. (to be honest. :>)
But today, while I was preparing to leave, I found myself in this mirror and I stopped.
And I was compelled to take the picture.

Ever heard of the guy named Narcissus?
I may be vain, who isn't, but I think there also is something other than vanity here.

Looking at a mirror is like having a dialogue. And we ask ourselves in the mirror not just "mirror, mirror, who is the fairest of them all?" (and the mirror will answer faithfully, "Not you, da" :P)

When I saw myself like this in the mirror, I felt that I was seeing myself in another room.
I felt like we were sitting in different rooms, looking at each other through this hole.
And what were we.. I mean, what was I taking to me sitting across me?
I was taking this picture in a hurry(...:/), so I didn't really figure it out then.

But I imagine that I said to myself in the mirror that everything's going to be okay.

Note: I am not insane :P I am just a moderately imaginative writer who likes the idea of a different space and world.

Oh, by the way, I also got this interesting photo there.
The room was so red that it was difficult to take a proper shot (and my camera isn't so great).
The result is this... well, I call it "An Accidental Art in the Changing Room." :P

When it was all red, I just found it amusing, but when I turned it to black and white, it turned..... kinda... SCARY~ X< What's that, a dancing ghost? I wasn't dancing, so who was?? Who was in the mirror??!

By the way, this is an art that I love as well:

Title: Flowers with name which I forgot
Artist: God (or so I believe :))
Date: April, 2012
Location: Outside a house in Ontario

They really make me happy X)

#7. An Art A Day - Day 1 In the Next Year...

For this week's project I decided to make an art a day.
The definition of "art" is a very tricky one, and it got trickier in the modern times.
I major in Art History, but I confess that I haven't really delved into this question. (I am not much into the history of modern & contemporary art, having ironically lost interest in it after taking three courses on it... :P I prefer Renaissance and Baroque art)
Although I think there should be some boundaries on what art is, I also think that we may as well expand our preconceived notion on art a bit.
Well, anyway, so I made an art.

I call it "In the Next Year..."

It is made of patches (actually, not the patches themselves, but the papers (?) that came along) I have used for the last four weeks. I use them because I have a bad spine--lower head, neck, shoulders, arms, wrists, fingers, back, hip, knees, ankles, you name it. :P I had no idea how much patches I use, so four weeks ago I decided on a whim not to throw away these papers (and bandaids, which I use to anchor(?) the patches and also for tiny injuries).
And last night I pulled them out of the pile that I used to gather them.
This is how it looked first: on my yoga mat.

I started sorting them out..
Frankly I was a bit surprised by their number, even more so because I was lucky to pass the last month without particular injuries.

Okay, so sometimes art serves as a tool for self-exploration, introspection, and therapy.
But when I was making this I wasn't particularly thinking of those things. I was more focused on how to arrange these objects in a neat and quick manner. (For when I made this it was pretty late at night :P)
But I guess that making these as objects for an art can mean something as well. :)

So here it is, after more than an hour and half, the final product:

I made the title "In the Next Year..." because I wanted to take a year to use this much patches, rather than a month. In short, while I was making this I decided to try harder to get better. :D

By the way doesn't the above picture look a bit like a piano and musical notes?

I hope that I created something that is visually pleasing, to some extent. :P
Today's project has a special meaning for me, for it tells a story about my illness and how I want to overcome it. :)

#4. Brainstorming - Day 3 Studying Dutch Baroque Art

Today's photo is me brainstorming on my essay about the Dutch Baroque Art.
I have three essays this term about the Dutch Golden Age. And though I am not directly discussing Rembrandt, almost every artist in the seventeenth-century Netherlands seems to be related to him somehow, at least in the eyes of later art historians.... :P

(Rembrandt, Self-Portrait, 1661, oil on canvas, 114x94cm, English Heritage, London.)

Below is my pile of articles and book chapters for the essays..
I might want to work in the 3M Post-It company....... I cannot refrain myself.... ;/

... Now, I'm going back to work, work, work! (pant pant...)

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 14 Stephen King

Today's photo is me (only a tip of my finger is me here, though :))
reading Stephen King's 11/22/63 via Kindle on my bed.

The world is swirling around..... both from my bed and inside the novel. :P

By the way, the story is captivating!!
It's about a time traveler trying to prevent the assassination of JFK and change the world.

I hope I can also be as prolific and creative as King.
Well, that's why I made a blog to post my writings (http://blog.naver.com/haejinsung) --so that I develop a habit or routine to "write" rather than planning, planning, and planning all along!

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 13 Caught Stealing

Today's photo is me about to eat up my brother's hand-made bread. XD

Actually I didn't eat up. I had a slice though, and it was goood :) My brother is a good cook, unlike me. ;P
It's been a while since I messed up with Picnik. I tried to make the picture look as if I am caught in a surveillance camera. :) I look a bit guilty, don't I?

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 12 Compass

Today's picture.

I was doodling on my notebook last night. I kinda got stuck in my story.

And sometimes you just feel like you've lost your compass.
Not just of my story project.

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 11 Acupucture

Today's photo is me just getting out of an acupuncture clinic.
How am I ever going to live without acupuncture? X)
For me, it does not kill my pain entirely, but relieves it. Sometimes it relieves it a lot.
Today I felt pretty good after the treatment and decided to take a shot. :)

By the way, the lighting in this corridor is... kinda good, huh.... -_-*

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 9 Working, Working

Today's photo: me working on my story project!
So far it is going well..... But it's just a beginning, and honestly I am excited and a bit scared at the same time. :P

I wrote "BORING BORING" over and over again here.
I was brooding about how to make my story special.... and not a cliché.

Preliminary sketch of the relationships among my main characters.

Oh, by the way, here is a glimpse of my little project that's been going on for about... two weeks.
I call it "A Mark A Day." Kinda lame, I know. Basically I press my lips on a post-it at the end of the day and draw lines around it and scribble today's weather and main events. This is yesterday's diary.

The sky was so bright yesterday. I thought the spring was finally coming. Only it was -13 degrees Celsius.

(campus, bus stop)

Sometimes I doodle a bit more. Above red line and smudged watercolor is my hand. X)

And this is me in a ghost costume (?). :D

#1. A Picture of Me A Day - Day 8 Old Writings

After some thought, I decided to do this project again -- a picture of me a day.
I began to work on my writing (I mean, I always have, but more actively this time, to actually "produce" something instead of planning all along), and while I am getting used to that project, I'd like to keep this 365 project relatively effortless.

But of course I will have fun at the same time!

Today's photo is me working on my story project #21: Offstage.
I was going over my writings in 2010 and making comments and stuffs.

Do you know that when you read your previous writings you are both absolutely appalled and amused? :/

My Moleskine notebook. Black ink from 2010 fall, blue ink from today.
